We’ve all heard it—“Say cheeeese!”
It’s practically the universal cue for a smile in photos. But here’s the truth: saying cheese doesn’t actually create a natural smile. Instead, it stretches the mouth wide, tightens the cheeks, and often results in an expression that feels more forced than joyful—especially with kids.
As a family photographer, I’ve learned that the best smiles aren’t the ones we ask for—they’re the ones that happen naturally. So instead of saying “cheese,” try something a little more fun and playful:
Use silly words. Swap “cheese” for “bananas,” “pancakes,” or “pickle juice.” The unexpected word usually gets a real giggle!
Ask a playful question. Try: “Who’s the silliest in the family?” or “What sound does a dinosaur make?” Watch the laughter follow.
Make it a game. Challenge them: “Don’t smile! Whatever you do, don’t smile…” Kids can’t resist breaking into a grin.
Focus on connection. Whisper a joke, tickle toes, or share a secret. Genuine moments of joy always look better than posed smiles.
At the end of the day, the most beautiful photos are the ones that feel like you—full of real laughter, soft smiles, and authentic connection. When kids are free to laugh at something silly, cuddle into you, or share their natural grin, those genuine moments tell a far richer story than any posed smile ever could.
To demonstrate the difference in photographs, I took some snaps of my daughter at a local apple orchard the other day. The left image is of her saying "Cheese!". It clearly looks forced with no corresponding reaction in her eyes or the rest of her face. On the right side, we told her funny stories and got this more natural smile-she lit up!
